Laboratory: Clinical Biochemistry
Test Name:
TRYPTASE - (P)
Test Code: TRPT
Clinical Information:
Tryptase is the most abundant protein in mast cells. Mast cells play a central role in inflammatory processes and are activated during allergic reactions. Tryptase determination is used for assessing mast cell activation that may occur as a result of anaphylaxis or allergen challenge. Peak values are typically reached 15 to 120 minutes after onset of anaphylaxis and return to baseline level within 3 to 6 hours. Chronic elevated tryptase levels are often seen in patients with systemic mastocytosis.

Patient preparation instructions: Specimens should be collected no earlier than 15 minutes from onset or up to 3 hours after the onset of the suspected incident causing mast cell activation. The time between the reaction and sample collection should be noted. To confirm the return to baseline levels an additional blood sample should be collected after 24-48 hours, time depending on the magnitude of the activation. At the suspicion of elevated basal levels or an underlying mastocytosis additional sample(s) should be taken 1-2 weeks(s) later.
