Clinical Information: |
Description: Bilirubin is an orange-yellow pigment formed from hemoglobin during the degradation of red blood cells. It is bound to albumin and transported to the liver where it is conjugated with glucuronic acid for solubilization and subsequent elimination by the digestive tract.
Levels of unconjugated bilirubin are increased if it is produced faster than it can be metabolized by the liver. Liver immaturity or other disorders of liver bilirubin conjugation will cause elevations in circulating unconjugated bilirubin. Bile duct obstruction or liver damage causes increases in both conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin. Bilirubin testing is used to assess liver function and evaluate disorders of bilirubin metabolism. It is also used to monitor the effect of neonatal phototherapy.
