Laboratory: Clinical Biochemistry
Test Name:
GLUCOSE - (P)
Test Code: G
Clinical Information:
Test Indications: Glucose is the major carbohydrate present in the blood. Oxidation of glucose is the primary source of cellular energy. The most common disorder related to carbohydrate metabolism is diabetes mellitus. Determination of plasma glucose is used for diagnosing and managing diabetes mellitus and other carbohydrate metabolism disorders such as gestational diabetes, hypoglycemia and pancreatic islet cell carcinoma.

Capillary blood and arterial blood glucose values are essentially the same and both are approximately 0.3 mmol/L higher than venous blood glucose values.  Plasma or serum glucose values are about 13% higher than whole blood values.
Collection Devices:
Neonate (infant < 30 days) samples must be placed on ice and transported to the lab immediately. Gray top tubes (NaF) must be used if samples from older children and adults cannot be delivered to the lab within 2 hours.
Specimen Required:

Plasma: 2.0 mL
Pediatric Plasma: 0.2 mL

Stability 8 hours at room temperature, 3 days refrigerated
Referral:
Serum: 2.0 mL

Samples must be transferred to an aliquot tube and stored frozen if analysis will not be complete within 48 hours (#110-10-05 Serum / Plasma Separation Procedure & Transport)
