Clinical Information:
Test Indications: This test is used for evaluating children with signs and symptoms of methylmalonic acidemia.

This test is also used for evaluating individuals with signs and symptoms associated with cobalamin deficiency (vitamin B12).
 
Restrictions:

<19 years: no restrictions

≥19 years: testing is restricted to physicians specializing in hematology, oncology, neurology, and genetics.

Collection Devices:
Specimen Required:
Serum: 1.0 mL
Pediatric Serum: 0.2 mL

Separate within 6 hours of collection. Store and send frozen.


Ambient: 8 hours

Refrigerated: 7 days

Frozen: 6 months

≤ 0.4 umol/L

Values up to 2.0 µmol/L are not uncommon in patients with renal failure or systemic disease without evidence of Vitamin B12 deficiency.
