Clinical Information:
Test Indications: This test is used for evaluating children with signs and symptoms of methylmalonic acidemia.

This test is also used for evaluating individuals with signs and symptoms associated with cobalamin deficiency (vitamin B12).
 
Test Approval Requirements:

Approval Is not required for patients <19 years. For adults (≥19y) testing is restricted without approval to following specialties: hematology, oncology, neurology, and genetics. All other requests require test approval. Click here for the Approval for Test Referral Biochemistry for (F260-11-02).

Collection Devices:
SST serum (Gold top) is also acceptable
Specimen Required:
Plasma: 3.0 mL
Pediatric Plasma: 3.0 mL

Separate within 6 hours of collection. Store and send frozen.


Ambient: 8 hours

Refrigerated: 7 days

Frozen: 28 days

Values up to 2.0 µmol/L are not uncommon in patients with renal failure or systemic disease without evidence of Vitamin B12 deficiency.
