Clinical Information:

20 mL of blood must be collected and clotted at 37°C for 1 hour.
Sample must be kept at 37°C and delivered within 1 hour. If more than one specimen is being collected for a cryoglobulin request, they must all be collected and clotted at 37°C.
Please mark primary or aliquot tubes with "Clotted at 37°C". See instructions below. Tubes clotted at room temperature may suffer loss of analyte if cryoglobulins are present.
Useful for evaluating patients with vasculitis, glomerulonephritis, and lymphoproliferative diseases. Also for evaluating patients with macroglobulinemia or myeloma in whom symptoms occur with cold exposure.

Specimen Required:

Blood: 20.0 mL

Serum: 5.0 mL

Fasting specimen preferred. Clot sample at 37°C for 1 hour
Serum ONLY collected in Serum tube WITHOUT barrier gel.
Plasma specimens are not acceptable due to possible development of cryofibrinogen or heparin precipitable protein.
Collection requirements:

Collect 10 – 20 mL of blood

Allow to clot at 37°C (37°C water bath or incubator)

Centrifuge at room temperature and remove serum

Indicate on the label that the specimen was clotted @ 37°C

For transport of unclotted specimen, place tubes into a container that will ensure temperature of 37°C is maintained for a minimum of one hour (eg. warm water in a beaker, pre-warmed gel packs) and deliver to lab immediately

Referral:

Referred-in serum that has been collected properly for cryoglobulin, can be refrigerated until delivered to Immunology Lab.
