Laboratory: Clinical Microbiology
Test Name:
SARS-CoV-2, INFLUENZA, RSV PANEL (NAAT) (QUADRUPLEX NAAT)
Test Code: QUAD
Clinical Information:
Description:
Reverse transcriptase PCR for the simultaneous detection of RSV, Influenza A, Influenza B and SARS-CoV-2.

Test Indications:
Acute symptomatic respiratory illness in the emergency department and admitted to hospital, or in a current inpatient for which a diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2, influenza or RSV will impact management (use or discontinuation of antiviral treatment or for infection control purposes).

Test Approval Requirements:
Admitted patient and patient pending admission only. Outpatients and patients expected to be discharged from emergency without a ward admission will not be processed.

Recommendations:
Generally, testing should only be requested during typical respiratory virus  season (Generally October to April), however testing is available year-round. Outside of season, testing should be limited to patients with a highly compatible syndrome or compatible syndrome with a travel history to tropical or southern latitudes or if an atypical influenza/RSV/SARS-CoV-2 season is expected. A nasopharyngeal swab must be obtained for this test. Throat swabs or nasal swabs are not acceptable. Nasopharyngeal aspirates and sputa ARE NOT suitable for this test and will be forwarded to a reference laboratory if submitted. Only individuals comfortable with obtaining a nasopharyngeal swab should obtain the specimen. Improper collection may result in false negative results.

Patient Preparation Instructions:
Accurate patient identification must be made prior to sample collection. Samples and requisitions must be labeled/completed in accordance with the Shared Health Specimen Acceptance Policy.
Nasopharyngeal swabs may be uncomfortable and patients should be advised of this.
