Laboratory: Clinical Biochemistry
Test Name:
BETA-2-MICROGLOBULIN - (P)
Test Code: BZMG
Clinical Information:
Test performed at: Health Sciences Centre
This test is used for prognosis assessment of multiple myeloma.
Beta-2-microglobulin is a small membrane protein similar to the major histocompatibility complex proteins. It's small size allows rapid filtration through renal glomeruli and subsequent reabsorbtion in the proximal tubules. Beta-2-microglobulin levels are increased in diseases associated with increased cell turnover. It is also elevated in autoimmune diseases, inflammation, liver disease, neoplasms and malignancies such as myeloma.
