Measurement of alpha1-antitrypsin aids in the diagnosis of juvenile and adult cirrhosis of the liver.  Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency has been associated with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, severe protein-losing disorders, and pulmonary emphysema.
 
Values should be used in conjunction with other laboratory and clinical findings.

If sample requirements are met, patients with quantitative results below 0.900 g/L will be sent to In-Common Laboratories for Proteotype testing.  If the mass spectrometry proteotype and quantitative serum levels are discordant, phenotyping will be added and reported.

Reportable Range: 0.35 – 5.00 g/L
 
High levels of alpha-1-antitrypsin may be present in patients with acute inflammation.
