Plasma proteins are synthesized in the liver, plasma cells, lymph nodes, spleen and bone marrow. Total protein measurements are used in the diagnosis and management of a variety of diseases involving the liver, kidney, or bone marrow as well as metabolic or nutritional disorders.
Reference ranges are for a hospital-based recumbent population. Ambulatory patients have a reference range approximately 5 g/L higher. |
