HEPARIN INDUCED THROMBOCYTOPENIA (HIT) - (S)

Clinical Information:
Test will be performed at:  St. Boniface Hospital, Hematology Laboratory, L4006-409 Tache, Winnipeg, MB

Ward must complete following Patient Information Requisition which will accompany specimen.  Specimen must be aliquoted and sent frozen.

HIT remains a clinicopathological diagnosis - the graded classification of positive results (weak 1.0-4.9 U/ml;  moderate 5.0-15.9 U/ml,  and strong >=16 U/ml) together with the pre-test 4T' probability score are recommended to evaluate post-test HIT probability.  See table 5, Warkentin TE et al. Thromb Res. 2017 May;153:108-117.

Specimen Required:
Blood: 10.0 mL

Samples must be aliquoted and sent frozen.  Samples sent at room temperature will NOT be processed.
Weekends:  Send aliquoted samples frozen.

Send 2 mL serum + 1 mL sodium citrate plasma - samples can be centrifuged and separated using standard laboratory processing protocols
Serum and plasma should each be aliquoted into 2x12x75 polypropylene tubes, labelled and frozen.  Please clearly label which tubes are serum and which are plasma.  Samples should be transported frozen on dry ice.  All labelling, capping, etc. must be freezer and water bath resistant.
