Laboratory: Clinical Biochemistry
Test Name:
REDUCING SUBSTANCES AND PH - (F)
Test Code: RSF
Clinical Information:
This test may be used to screen for carbohydrate intolerance as the cause for diarrhea. It is essential to test the liquid portion of stool. Presence of carbohydrates may be consistent with, but not diagnositic of, primary or secondary disaccharidase deficiency or intestinal monosaccharide malabsorption. Test is performed using thin layer chromatography which indicates presence of the sugar along with its identity (glucose, sucrose, lactose, etc.). It does not quantify the amount of carbohydrate present.

Test performed at Dynacare.
Collection Devices:
Collected in a similar leak-proof plastic or glass container. Specimen must be transported to lab immediately or stored frozen.
