WATER DEPRIVATION TEST - (P and U)

Clinical Information:
This procedure is used as a test of anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) reserve in patients with suspected Diabetes Insipidus.  Serum and urine osmolality and electrolyte levels are used to monitor patient’s response to oral water restriction.  This procedure is performed in the Endocrinology & Metabolism Clinical Investigation Unit.

Plasma: 1.0 mL
Pediatric Plasma: 0.3 mL

AND a 5 mL urine aliquot from a random urine collection.

Urgent sodium and osmolality determinations are required to rapidly monitor the progression of dehydration.  This should be arranged with the laboratory at least 24 hours in advance.
