Clinical Information:
Test Indications: This test is used to monitor patients with cystinosis, a rare lysosomal storage disease which results in an abnormal accumulation of the amino acid cystine in various organ and tissues of the body such as kidneys, eyes, muscles, pancreas and brain.

Restricted to Manitoba Medical Geneticists for diagnosed patients ONLY.

Collection Devices:
Specimen Required:
Whole Blood: 5.0 mL
Pediatric Whole Blood: 5.0 mL

Processing must be done as soon as possible after drawing the blood samples.
 
Send the sample right away to the Metabolic Lab.
 
Give the sample to a technologist from the Metabolic Lab. The technologist in charge of this analysis will do the extraction and organize the send out.
 
Sample is kept at room temperature and should be processed within 60 minutes since standing markedly decreases the yield of white blood cells.
 
* Date and time of last 2 doses of medication required for all cystinosis testing.

The blood collection for this analysis needs to be performed at Health Sciences Center.

For cystinosis patient only. Requests must be booked in advance with the Metabolic Laboratory. Test offered only 4 times/year.
