PERITONEAL DIALYSIS FLUID (Biochemistry Specimen ID: DF) - DF
Test Code:
See Reference Values section below
|
||||
| Clinical Information: |
Alternate Name(s): Peritoneal Dialysate
Description: Analysis of peritoneal dialysis fluid (dialysate) is performed when a patient is undergoing Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) or Continuous Cycling Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD). The main goal is to assess the adequacy of peritoneal dialysis (Kt/v ratio or clearance), as well as the nutritional status of the patient during treatment. The results may also be used to assess the Peritoneal Equilibration Test (PET) when a patient is initially evaluated for peritoneal dialysis.
Dialysis fluid results are always compared to urine and/or plasma results, and the tests must be ordered on the Peritoneal Dialysis (Kt/v) Requisition (R250-10-84).
Test Approval Requirements: Any test not listed on this page must be requested as a MISCELLANEOUS fluid test and requires approval by a Clinical Biochemist prior to reporting. Ordering providers should contact the Biochemist on duty through HSC paging prior to ordering any miscellaneous tests.
It is strongly recommended to collect a corresponding serum sample to compare to miscellaneous fluid results. |

Reference Intervals: Current tests performed on Peritoneal Dialysis Fluid include: Creatinine (CRFL), Glucose (GFL), Total Protein (TPFL), Urea (UFL).
The interpretation of dialysis fluid test results is performed by Nephrologists and other qualified staff in the Peritoneal Dialysis clinic. No reference intervals are provided as the results are intended for input into the Kt/V or PET calculators. Results are not intended to be used in isolation.
