Clinical Information:
Test Indications:
Suspicion of SARS-CoV-2 infection in an admitted patient or a patient pending admission. Outpatients and emergency room patients without a pending admission will not be tested in-house. SARS-CoV-2 typically causes symptoms consistent with a viral  upper respiratory tract infection. Specimens should generally be collected only from patients with compatible symptoms. Screening of asymptomatic patients at admission or prior to surgery will only be performed in accordance with current Shared Health and infection control recommendations.

Recommendations:
A nasopharyngeal swab or aspirate must be obtained for this test. Throat swabs or nasal swabs are not acceptable. Sputa ARE NOT suitable for this test and will be forwarded to a reference laboratory. Only individuals comfortable with obtaining a nasopharyngeal swab or aspirate should obtain the specimen. Improper collection may result in false negative results.

Patient Preparation Instructions:
Accurate patient identification must be made prior to sample collection.
Samples and requisitions must be labeled/completed in accordance with the Shared Health Specimen Acceptance Policy. Nasopharyngeal swabs may be uncomfortable and patients should be advised of this.

Specimen Handling:
Specimens can be stored at room temperature (15–30°C) for up to 24 hours and refrigerated (2–8°C) up to seven days until testing is performed. Ensure specimens are sent using appropriate packaging in accordance with Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulation.
