Laboratory: Clinical Biochemistry  (AUTOMATED)
Test Name:
CERULOPLASMIN - (S) (B)
Test Code: CEPL
Clinical Information:
Test Indications: Test is performed by the Automated Laboratory at Health Sciences Centre using an immunoturbidimetric assay.
Ceruloplasmin levels can be used along with other biochemical tests and clinical signs and sympotms to diagnose Wilson's disease or Menkes disease. Its levels are lower in these diseases. It can also be used in screening of first-degree relatives affected with Wilson's disease. Ceruloplasmin can be used for treatment monitoring along with other biochemical tests and physical examination. Rarely, ceruloplasmin may be ordered to help diagnose copper deficiencies.
Recommendations: Ceruloplasmin is an acute phase reactant and increased levels can be found in acute and chronic infections, malignancies as well as during pregnancy, with oral contraceptive use and hormone replacement therapy. This can affect results interpretation. The non-specific causes of lower than normal ceruloplasmin levels include liver disease, intestinal malabsorption, malnutrition, and nephrotic syndrome, which may also affect results interpretation. Ceruloplasmin measurement is not recommended for assessment of these conditions and diseases.
Collection Devices:
Collect a minimum of 0.5 mL pediatric blood in each microtainer.
Heparinized plasma is acceptable.  EDTA plasma is not acceptable.
