Laboratory: Clinical Biochemistry
Test Name:
MISCELLANEOUS FLUID (Biochemistry Specimen ID: MF)
Test Code: None
Clinical Information:
Description:  Miscellaneous fluids are body fluid specimens for which the requested test has not been validated for routine testing by Shared Health Diagnostic Services. Any test not listed on the Body Fluid Requisition (R250-10-53) is considered a Miscellaneous Fluid.

Test Approval Requirements: Clinical Biochemist Approval Required

Miscellaneous fluid tests require approval by a Clinical Biochemist prior to reporting. Ordering providers should contact the Biochemist on duty through HSC paging prior to requesting a miscellaneous fluid test.

Recommendations: It is strongly recommended to collect a corresponding serum sample to which miscellaneous fluid results are to be compared, as no reference ranges are available.

Collection Devices:
Alternate Device: Vacutainer, Plain NO GEL NO Additive (Fluid Collection)

Quantity: 1

Specimen Required:

Adult Miscellaneous Fluid: 2.0 mL

Pediatric Miscellaneous Fluid: 2.0 mL

Collection Information: Submit to the laboratory in a sterile collection container without anticoagulant.

Special Processing: Specimen Management:

1. If test has Biochemist approval, follow routine registration and accessioning procedures for Miscellaneous fluids (see SOP 110-10-74).

2. If test does not yet have Biochemist approval, or Biochemist is not immediately available: DO NOT REJECT. Register as MF, test code MSFL, and test(s) requested in Clinical Details.  Send the sample to Chemistry (or referral lab) for offline testing & Biochemist review.

Referral:

Adult Volume: 2.0 mL

Pediatric Volume: 2.0 mL

Shipping & Storage: Ship refrigerated if testing cannot occur within 2 hours of collection. If LD is requested, an aliquot must be shipped at room temperature.

Testing Laboratory (MB): Health Sciences Centre, St Boniface Hospital, and Westman lab.
