At HSC and SBGH: (Weekdays 0800 - 1630 hrs)
Please contact Pathology and arrange for a technologist to attend the biopsy. Collection procedure for other sites: - Place fresh renal tissue onto a Telfa pad and fold in half. - Soak 4"x4" cotton gauze with normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride irrigation). - Place Telfa pad with renal specimen onto soaked gauze and fold - Place soaked gauze containing Telfa pad and renal specimen into a small Zip-lock bag and seal. - Add ice pack to small foam cooler and place specimen into cooler. Note: Avoid direct contact of specimen with ice pack. Do not use dry ice. Freezing the specimen will cause severe artifacts that will affect interpretation. Transportation: 1. For sites within Winnipeg, arrange for transportation to HSC Pathology through established courier service - 1-hour service. Notify HSC Pathology that a renal biopsy is being sent (787-7588). 2. For sites outside of Winnipeg, please contact HSC Pathology to arrange transportation of the specimen (1-204-787-7588). Note: Ensure specimen will not freeze during transportation to HSC Pathology. All specimens must be properly labeled with an appropriate patient identification. All specimens must be accompanied by a completed Pathology requisition. Pertinent information including patient demographics, clinical history, physician’s name and specimen type is required as per DSM Specimen Acceptance Policy 10-50-03.
