Laboratory: Clinical Biochemistry  (AUTOMATED)
Test Name:
FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE (FSH) - (P)
Test Code: FSH
Clinical Information:
FSH and LH are pituitary gonadotropins that regulate and stimulate the growth and function of the gonads (ovaries & testes). In females, FSH and LH stimulate ovarian follicle growth and maturation, estrogen secretion and ovulation. High FSH concentrations occur during menopause due to changes in ovarian function and and reduced estrogen secretion. In males, FSH stimulates testicular growth and induces sperm development. FSH and LH testing are used in the evaluation and management of hypogonadism, menstrual irregularites, infertility investigation and diagnosis of pituitary disorders.
