Laboratory: Clinical Biochemistry  (SPECIAL CHEMISTRY)
Test Name:
RENIN DIRECT (MASS, CONCENTRATION) - (P)
Test Code: RENI
Clinical Information:
Test Indications: Investigating primary aldosteronism (eg, adrenal adenoma/carcinoma and adrenal cortical hyperplasia) and secondary aldosteronism (eg, renovascular disease, salt depletion, potassium loading, cardiac failure with ascites, pregnancy, Bartter syndrome).

See Hypertension Canada’s 2020 Guidelines for more information.

Collection Devices:
Specimen Required:

Plasma: 1.0 mL

Collection Information:

·        The recommended collection time is 7-10 a.m., after the patient is active (walking, standing, seating) for at least 2 hours. Patient must be seated for 5-15 min prior to collection.

·        Collect EDTA plasma. Serum or lithium heparin plasma are not acceptable.

·        Do not pre-chill EDTA blood collection tubes nor store tubes on ice, but process blood at room temperature to avoid cryoactivation of prorenin in renin testing.

·        Centrifuge tubes in a non-refrigerated centrifuge, separate EDTA-plasma from cells immediately after centrifugation, then aliquot and deep-freeze at -20 °C or below instantly.

Specimen Stability:

Ambient: 6 hours

Refrigerated: not stable

Frozen: 3 days at -20oC or at least 1 month at -80°C

Referral:
Plasma: 1.0 mL
Pediatric Plasma: 0.8 mL

Shipping & Storage: Store and ship frozen. Preferably on dry ice if available.

Testing Laboratory (MB): Send specimen to Health Sciences Centre - MS5
