Clinical Information:
Description: Second or third level test for evaluation of testosterone status. It may be useful in cases of abnormal sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) or assessing circulating testosterone in females with symptoms and signs of hyperandrogenism with normal testosterone levels.
It may also be used when testosterone immunoassay results appear inconsistent with the clinical assessment.
 
The preferred test for assessment of active testosterone is Testosterone, Total, Bioavailable & Free  (https://apps.sbgh.mb.ca/labmanual/test/view?seedId=20688).
 
ALL requests for this test require the Biochemistry Test Approval Form to be completed. 
Patient preparation instructions: Fasting is preferred, but not required.
Collection Devices:
Serum GEL tubes are not acceptable.
 
Specimen Required:


Serum: 2.5 mL
Pediatric Serum: 2.0 mL

Collection Information: Collect morning specimen (6 AM-10 AM).
Specimen Stability: 
Refrigerated: 14 days
Frozen: 2 months
