Laboratory: Clinical Biochemistry  (SENDOUTS)
Test Name:
ANDROSTENEDIONE - (S)
Test Code: ANSD
Clinical Information:
Test Indications: Androstenedione is produced in the adrenal gland and gonads and is the immediate precursor to testosterone. It is a weak androgen and has approximately one tenth of the androgenic potency of testosterone. Its physiologic role is not well defined.
There is good correlation between 17-OHP, testosterone & androstenedione levels as they are all under similar influences. 17-OHP & testosterone levels should be sufficient for monitoring CAH.
Androstenedione testing is available to pediatric endocrinologists only. It is only approved to investigate disorders of sexual development. It is not to be used for reproductive endocrinology or infertility assessment. Its use in the evaluation of PCOS is not well established.
Test Approval Requirements: Available to pediatric endocrinologists for the investigation of disorders of sexual development.
