Clinical Information:
Patients should not eat avocados, bananas, butternuts, cantaloupe, dates, eggplant, grapefruit, hickory nuts, honeydew melon, kiwi fruit, melon, nuts, pecans, pineapple, plantains, plums, tomatoes or walnuts, which are high in serotonin for 48 hours before and during collection.
Collection Devices:
Collect 24 h urine in a urine container with 25 mL of 50% acetic acid.  For SBH - bring the container to Biochemistry for preservative.  For HSC - obtain container from the Chemistry Laboratory.   Refrigerate specimen during collection.

Pediatric Urine: 2.5 mL

Test performed at MML on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 10:00am. Available to endocrinologists and sub-specialists as a second level test for the investigation of carcinoid tumors with normal 5-HIAA.
