Test Indications:
Clinical suspicion of symptomatic pertussis. This test SHOULD NOT be performed on asymptomatic contacts of patients with pertussis. Follow the Manitoba Health contact recommendations for contacts of active pertussis cases. Recommendations: A nasopharyngeal swab or aspirate must be obtained for this test. Dacron or rayon-tipped NP swabs are required. Cotton and calcium alginate-tipped swabs will be rejected. A dry swab submitted in a sterile container is preferred. Throat swabs or nasal swabs are not acceptable. Only individuals comfortable with obtaining a nasopharyngeal swab or aspirate should obtain the specimen. Improper collection may result in false negative results. Samples and requisitions must be labeled/completed in accordance with the Shared Health Specimen Acceptance Policy. Nasopharyngeal swabs may be uncomfortable and patients should be advised of this. |

Specimen Handling:
Submit specimen to laboratory within 2 hours if stored at room temperature. May be stored up to 48 hours at 2-8ºC. Ensure specimens are sent using appropriate packaging in accordance with Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulation. |
