Test Indications:
Clinical suspicion of symptomatic pertussis.  This test SHOULD NOT be performed on asymptomatic contacts of patients with pertussis.  Follow the Manitoba Health contact recommendations for contacts of active pertussis cases.

A nasopharyngeal swab or aspirate must be obtained for this test.  Dacron or rayon-tipped NP swabs are required.  Cotton and calcium alginate-tipped swabs will be rejected.  A dry swab submitted in a sterile container is preferred.  Throat swabs or nasal swabs are not acceptable.  Only individuals comfortable with obtaining a nasopharyngeal swab or aspirate should obtain the specimen.  Improper collection may result in false negative results.  Detailed instruction on how to obtain a nasopharyngeal swab are located here:

Patient Preparation Instructions:
Accurate patient identification must be made prior to sample collection.
Samples and requisitions must be labeled/completed in accordance with the Shared Health Specimen Acceptance Policy.  Nasopharyngeal swabs may be uncomfortable and patients should be advised of this.

Specimen Handling:
Submit specimen to laboratory within 2 hours if stored at room temperature.  May be stored up to 48 hours at 2-8ºC.  Ensure specimens are sent using appropriate packaging in accordance with Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulation.
