BARTHOLIN CYST/FLUID, CULTURE, AEROBIC/ANAEROBIC BACTERIA - (Asp)

Clinical Information:
Test Indications:
Identification of organisms associated with Bartholin gland cysts.
Various bacteria including Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Staphylococcus aureus/MRSA, beta-hemolytic streptococci, Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli), and anaerobes can cause infection of the vestibular (Bartholin's) glands and abscess formation. Mixed infections are common.

Recommendations:
Always submit as much fluid as possible; never submit a swab dipped in fluid.
Do not submit sample in needle and syringe for culture.
Indicate antimicrobic therapy on ordering requisition.
Samples and requisitions must be labeled/completed in accordance with the Shared Health Specimen Acceptance Policy.
Accurate patient identification must be made prior to sample collection. Patient identification should be done in accordance with the site policy.

Patient Preparation Instructions:
1. Disinfect skin with chlorhexidine preparation.
2. Using a sterile needle and syringe aspirate fluid from ducts.
3. Transfer sample into sterile container.

Preferred:  Anaerobic Transport System
Alternate:  Sterile container
Specimen Required: Aspirate of the Bartholin Cyst duct (≥1 mL) (Adult and Pediatric)
Referral:

Ensure samples that are being sent to a referral laboratory are packaged in accordance with Transport of Dangerous Goods recommendations for diagnostic samples.

Aerobes:  no growth
Anaerobes:  no anaerobes isolated.
Reporting:  A final negative report will be sent after 3-5 days.
