Test Indications:
Identification of organisms associated with Bartholin gland cysts. Various bacteria including Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Staphylococcus aureus/MRSA, beta-hemolytic streptococci, Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli), and anaerobes can cause infection of the vestibular (Bartholin's) glands and abscess formation. Mixed infections are common. Recommendations: Always submit as much fluid as possible; never submit a swab dipped in fluid. Do not submit sample in needle and syringe for culture. Indicate antimicrobic therapy on ordering requisition. Samples and requisitions must be labeled/completed in accordance with the Shared Health Specimen Acceptance Policy. Accurate patient identification must be made prior to sample collection. Patient identification should be done in accordance with the site policy. Patient Preparation Instructions: 1. Disinfect skin with chlorhexidine preparation. 2. Using a sterile needle and syringe aspirate fluid from ducts. 3. Transfer sample into sterile container. |
