Test Name:
VAGINAL SWAB, FEMALE (<=12 YEARS OF AGE), CULTURE, AEROBIC BACTERIA
Test Code: None
Clinical Information:
Test Indications:
Symptomatic vaginal discharge (vaginitis) in a pre-pubescent female.

Recommendations:
Testing for bacterial vaginitis by culture is only indicated in pre-pubescent females with symptomatic vaginal discharge or vulvar erythema suggestive of bacterial vaginitis. Vaginitis in pre-pubertal girls may be caused by bacterial pathogens such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae and Staphylococcus aureus, but may also be non-infectious or associated with foreign bodies in the vagina. Consultation with a pediatric gynecologist may be appropriate. For post-pubertal females, see tests for bacterial vaginosis and vaginitis.

Patient Preparation Instructions:
Accurate patient identification must be made prior to sample collection.
Samples and requisitions must be labeled/completed in accordance with the Shared Health Specimen Acceptance Policy. Given the sensitive nature of the sample, careful explanation and parental involvement is important.
