Laboratory: Clinical Biochemistry  (AUTOMATED)
Test Name:
TRIIODOTHYRONINE, FREE (Free T3) - (P)
Test Code: FT3
Clinical Information:
Description: FT3 is available as a component of the Thyroid Reflex Testing protocol when TSH is <0.1 mU/L.

Ordering FT3 outside of reflex testing is restricted and can only be ordered using “Specialized Endocrinology Requisition ” by pre-approved physicians. All other requests will be cancelled.

Orders for FT3 received on non-Shared Health requisition should be substituted by THYROID REFLEX TESTING - (P) (if TSH not ordered).

Test Indications: Measurement of FT3 is rarely indicated in suspected thyroid disease.

FT3 may be useful in situations where thyroid disease is suspected clinically and TSH is abnormal, but FT4 is inappropriately normal.

Patient Preparation Instructions:  This test is unaffected by multivitamins (45 - 125 µg biotin) or biotin-only supplements.
